In the Upanishads it is said, “what is it that by knowing which nothing remains to be known?”
That is Enlightenment. To qualify this statement further, to be Enlightened means to be infinite and to be
Absolute, to realize for yourself in one lifetime that you have never been born, you have never died, you
have always been and always will be. It means that you are everyone and everything that has ever existed or
ever will exist. This term “Enlightenment” therefore, cannot possibly be applied to any form of awareness
except total and complete union with God. Such a state is only conferred by the grace of an Enlightened
Teacher or a Perfect Master. This Enlightened Teacher is rare, he reveals the inner Path of Light and Sound,
a term which does not do any justice to the enormity of this miracle, religions speak of this Light and Sound
but can no longer reveal it. It is an extremely profound energy, containing all the knowledge required to
build the many planes of consciousness and to maintain their presence and integrity. So, how do we recognize
Spiritual qualifications of the Guru are as equally important as the educational ones, in fact,
are a great deal more important because we are going to commit years of our life to find the answers to
bigger questions. Therefore, before we choose to give our lives in the hands of a Guru, it is important to
check the following qualifications:
The Guru can convey Enlightenment at will.
We are able to meet and talk to other Enlightened People.
Spiritual initiation consists of revelation, and not of information, imagination and
The Guru must be able to converse with his initiates both internally and externally,
since the ability to communicate with his initiates on other planes of consciousness is a part of
inner spiritual teaching.
The greatest and the most charitable quality of an Enlightened
Teacher or the Guru is that, on his Path, there is no discrimination on the basis of an individuals’ religious
background, sex, creed, colour or caste. Spiritual Enlightenemnt is given regardless of their gender or
Beware of the Guru who tells you that you will have to be dead to
be Enlightened, it is nonsense; those who make such absurd statements must be challenged and questioned about
their spiritual state. All the scriptures of the East bear testimony to the fact that one attains to the state
of Enlightenment in one lifetime through the grace of a True Guru, and it is called jivanmukti, which means to
be Enlightened whilst alive.
